Work & Poker
I've been working a lot - playing a lot too. I'm still not happy with my play, probably because I haven't had enough to time to review my sessions. I'm going to keep a few days break from poker to review my hands and stats from past weeks. This is a huge part of becoming a winning poker player. Some people make theories of online poker rooms cheating and all that stuff - then we'll find out this player has never even looked at the way he played a certain hand. Reviewing your hands and sessions is something you'll need to do.
Actually, the fact that I have played a lot of poker but "haven't had time" to review my sessions really worries me. It's a lazy thing to do - the not doing I mean. I'm not that ambitious about poker anymore though, and that might be the reason. This website building stuff is quite entertaining, and I certainly enjoy it. Anyway, until I get some hands reviews, I won't be playing more poker.
Poker Games - 02.06.08
I've been playing a decent amount of poker with both good and bad results. I'm quite happy with the way I played bigger pots, although simply got coolered in some of them. However, I lost way too much value against some regulars. At least 2 player have, it seems, changed the way they play against me and this was a great benefit for them. I'm kind of surprised, because I've been playing against both of them for the last 2 weeks and they both switched their styles at the same time.
I'm down 5 buy-ins for the last 2 days. Seriously, I basically lost all of that in 2 pots that where quite sick to be honest. Both against the same guy:
This guy's gone all-in against me (pre-flop) with JJ (did it 3 days ago, I had AA), for example, so obviously when we get all-in, I'm not too worried with my KK. Well, obviously he's got AA and he wins a 4 buy-in pot. A couple of hours later I'm 3 buy-ins deep and he's just a bit below 7 buy-ins, I get AA. There's a fairly new player UTG who raises, the 7 buy-in opponent re-raises. I think for about 12 seconds and re-raise even more. To my surprise, UTG thinks quite long, almost to the point where his timebank runs out of time.
Finally he folds, and the player with 7-buy-ins goes all-in, instantly too. I obviously call. It's a 6 buy-in pot and flop brings ATQ... I'm happy. Turn brings 9, and river... J!
If there's anything more annoying than losing with AA vs. KK pre-flop, it's losing against a player who won against you with his AA and your KK.
For a Better Month!
So January passed by... that was fast! That was 1/12 of the year 2008. I'm very, very disappointed with the work I got done during this huge portion of time. I'm not *that* disappointed in myself, though, since mostly things were out of my control. I'm feeling fired up for February and hopefully things go well.
Full Tilt Poker had some awesome games running last night. $5/$10 and $10/$20 games were loaded with some surprisingly spewey players who basically had little to no idea about how to maintain value in your actions. That said, I wasn't surprised to see they were from Sweden. For some reason, people from that country seem to play very aggressive poker, and it feels like they're doing that just for the sake of being aggressive. I don't know where they get that, some kind of a Swedish mentality I guess...
Anyway, needless to say 3 hours of playing and a 10 buy-in profit is a very nice result. It wasn't all because the opponents were bad, though, cards just kept coming. I had AA two times, AK two times, QQ three times (played 2 tables) which isn't anything crazy yet, but the way I kept being in ideal situations was amazing.
I flopped nut straight when my opponent flopped top trips (this was against a half buy-in player, though). I had AK and bet to J54 flop against a player who plays aggressively on pre-flop and quite passively on later streets, he calls and turn is K. I check, he bets, I check-raise minimum (felt like this player can't just call this, so either has to go all-in or fold, and nobody wants to fold to a min raise). He shoves, I call, he's got QQ. Nice!
I'm not sure about his call on the flop... maybe it would have been a bit better with something like KJ, QJ, maybe even AJ. But now he's just creating extra trouble for himself, I think. His image was so passive on later streets, that I knew it really wouldn't make sense to continue betting if I didn't hit. He probably didn't know what I knew. If he was aware of his image, his play was horrible.
Going to play some more poker tonight!
