The first step to learn to play poker games is (obviously) to memorize poker rules. Don't sit-in to a poker game unless you really know these rules, it's basically just throwing away money. So, find a game that you might be interested in and learn how to play it by reading through my poker rules.
You can read following rules on this website:
Texas Holdem Rules
Omaha Poker Rules
Seven Card Stud Rules
Draw Poker
HORSE Poker
Razz Rules
Crazy Pineapple
More stuff you should know about: There are poker tournaments and cash games. The main difference between these two is that you can reload as many times (or buy-in for whatever amount between min. and max. buy-in) as you want in cash games. Stakes are the same all the time, too, so you can control what kind of blinds you're playing with whenever you want to. In tournaments, however, blinds will get bigger all the time and you won't be able to "control them".
If you get a bad run of cards, you'll probably be out of the tournament, whereas in cash games you could just get more cash to the table or leave with remainings of your money. In tournaments, you either get to the money or you're out. Poker rules are the same for tournaments as far the game play goes, though.
Even though the games are same, there are different variations of different poker games and you should be aware of these variations in order to learn to play those poker games. Obviously rules aren't same for all of those variations, so here's something you should know:
Limit: Limit (also known as "Fixed Limit") games, as the name suggests, you're only allowed to be a fixed amount of money. If the blinds are $3/$6, you'll be able to bet $3 in the first two betting rounds, and $6 in the rest of them. When you can bet $3, then you can raise $3 - when you can $6, then you can raise $6. There's usually a cap of 4 raises during one betting round. Basically meaning that if you bet $3, your opponent can raise to $6, you can raise to $9 and then he can raise $12 - now you can either call or fold.
No Limit: Like the name says, there are "no limits" in the rules of No Limit poker other than your stack in the game. You can only get as much money into the pot as you've got on the table, that's the only limit. No Limit poker is a startling game where you might lose your whole stack in one hand - if you can't deal with that, don't play No Limit games.
Pot Limit: Pot Limit games are lethal for new player's bankroll, because pots might get "surprisingly" high all of a sudden. The most played Pot Limit game is Pot Limit Omaha, where money moves very fast and anything can happen. You can only raise the amount of the pot.
