How to Play Omaha Poker

The most popular version of Omaha Poker is its "High Only" version (there's also "High/Low"). Omaha is played quite much like Texas Holdem Poker (this game's also known as Omaha Hold'em) and there are only a few differences between these games. Pot-limit Omaha (especially) is gaining more & more popularity all the time and it is already quite big in Europe. This game is very popular among high stakes players, too, because of its action level and wide variety of options. Omaha Hold'em is a very entertaining game.

Differences between Omaha Hold'em and Texas Hold'em poker games include, well, you get dealt 4 cards in Omaha instead of 2. But what makes it fun (in Omaha poker), is that you can and you *must* use 2 only. No more or less, you can only use 2 of your pocket cards and use 3 community cards to make the best possible 5 card combination.

Rounds are played in the same fashion as in Texas Hold'em. First, blinds are being posted, then the dealer deals everyone four cards, there'll be a betting round where you either 'fold', 'call' or 'raise'. Flop is dealt (3 community cards) and second betting round, now you can 'bet', too. The fourth community card, turn, and another betting round. Then the last community card, river, and the last betting round and a showdown.

Omaha Poker Variants

Omaha High - Omaha High is all-in-all a simple game of poker. You must use two holecards and three community cards to make the highest possible 5 card combination.

Omaha High/Low - This gets a little bit more complicated, because there are now more ways to win a part of the pot other than just a "high hand". But first let's make this clear: the highest hand wins *always*, either the whole pot or half of it. Omaha High/Low is also being referred to as "Omaha 8-or-better". This is because only cards between 1 (Ace = 1 or 14) and 8 qualify for low hand. So if you can't make a combination of five cards which all include cards that are 8 or lower, you don't have a low hand.

A2345 is the best low hand, while 45678 is the worst possible. Again you must use two holecards and three community cards to make your hand, but you can use different 2 cards to make high and different cards to make low. You can also use same cards. And you can use same or different community cards, too. Hands with lower number win, so A2458 loses to 23456. If there's no low hand, the highest hand wins the whole pot.
