LAG Poker Myths

Incorrect Beliefs

Loose-Aggressive style is probably the most profitable poker style when performed in the most profitable way vs. when other styles are being performed in the most profitable way. Obviously in this case, there's got to be a catch of some kind. And here it is: LAG poker is very, very challenging. Most poker players are certainly not skilled enough to win by playing LAG poker. Since there aren't many winners out there (relatively), obviously some kind of misbeliefs exist. This article is about LAG poker myths and incorrect beliefs.

Going All-in w/ Weak Hands
It's actually very good if player around the world believe LAG players are willing to go all-in with all kinds of weak hands. And they do believe that... you shouldn't though. The idea of winning Loose-Aggressive poker is to make our opponents thinking we're willing to get all-in with weak hands that they can possibly beat somehow.

The whole meaning of playing loose poker is to show our opponents we can do any kind of stuff with a bunch of hands. When really, we play very loose poker in small pots with questionable hands, this way losing as low amount of money as possible. (Remember, LAG players are supposed to work on losing less money in those small pots). Then, we concentrate on taking down those big pots with great hands against our opponents who are now actually playing loose poker theirselves by going all-in with weaker hands, failing to acknowledge this.

Obviously there are times when LAG players get caught of bluffing just like any other player. Or because a Loose-Aggressive player switched his style to even more loose poker on the later streets because his/her opponent is going all-in with weak hands. This all just boosts a LAG player's image, which, for the player, is a great thing.

The Same At All Limits
A big LAG myth is definitely believing it's the same at all limits. There are obviously major differences between $10/$20 and $0.50/$1 No Limit Hold'em games. For example, if you observe a $10/$20 game and try to get help from that, it's going to be difficult since there are so much stuff those players that you won't be able to. Aside from everyone there knowing their opponents are aware of poker's basics and more than that, they've got reads on each other which you're not going to be able to access.

Positions are very important in Loose-Aggressive poker overall, but one of the most significant differences between low and high stakes is the awareness of what kind of an effect correct position playing can have. Generally, you won't find too many players at $0.50/$1 who pay too much attention to positions, this way giving you a clear advantage in certain cases, but on the other hand you'll have to watch out for getting called when you hold weak hands, since even though these players don't really know how they just made a bad call position-wise, it's still hard to play weak hands against medium/better.

In general, lower stakes players don't pay as much attention to anything happening at the table as higher stakes players do. Therefore fully trusting your LAG table image has been successfully notified by all players at the table is rather optimistic. Basically, you should play "tighter loose-aggressive poker" at lower stakes.

Continuation bets aren't as effective as they're at higher stakes, either. This all comes down to players generally not understanding position and hand values.
